The Totem Compass is a magical device that helps you find the people you love, without the need for cell service, apps or Wi-Fi. To achieve this, Totems harness the power of GNSS, layered with a peer-to-peer communication protocol and our Unity Mesh Network™ that allows you to find your friends by simply following the pretty lights.
This is the second of many tutorial blogs designed to make your festival compass experience as easy as possible. For more information on how the Totem Compass works, check out our blog post all about it! This blog will cover everything you need to know about the Totem Compass Power Button.
How to Turn On your Totem Compass
When you turn over your festival compass, you’ll see two buttons – the Power Button is the raised button on the right hand side.
The depressed button next to it is your SOS Button, which allows you to send SOS alerts to your friends if you need them to come find you. The SOS button is located within a recessed cavity so that you don’t accidentally press it. Don't worry about the SOS Button for now—we'll cover SOS Mode in a later blog.
To turn on your rave compass, click the Power Button once. It’s that simple!
Totems are shipped partially charged, so it should power up within a few seconds. If your Totem doesn't turn on when you click the Power Button, charge it for 20 minutes and try again.
Totem Touch Crystal on Power Up
When you power on your Totem Compass, you will see two things.
First, the Touch Crystal (the Crystal at the center of your festival compass) will illuminate. The color of your Touch Crystal on power up corresponds with the latest software version your Totem Compass is running. In the example below, the Touch Crystal color is yellow. Before setting off on an adventure with your Totems, make sure to check the Software Update Portal on our website and update your Totem Compass to the latest software version.
Totem Battery Level Indicator
The second thing you will see on your Totem Compass upon power up is the Battery Level Indicator!
The Halo (the colored ring of LEDs around the circumference of your Totem) will quickly flash to display your Totem’s current battery level.
A green full Halo indicates that your battery is fully charged. A yellow half-filled Halo means your battery level is around 50%. An orange quarter-filled Halo means your battery level is around 25%.
Totems charge in about 45 minutes via USB-C, so if you’ve got less than a full Halo, make sure to charge it up before you leave for your event! Your Totem Compass will thank you. ♥️
One important thing to know: The Battery Level Indicator is ONLY accurate when your Totem isn't currently plugged into a power source. If you turn your Totem on while it's plugged in, the battery level indicator may tell you that your Totem is more charged than it actually is.
How to Turn Off your Totem Compass
This part is easy!
To turn off your Totem, hold the Power Button until the Touch Crystal goes dark. This usually takes around 2-3 seconds.
Here’s a festival compass pro tip: If you’re at an event and don’t want to be found, turn your Totem Compass off. This will cause your data to turn stale on your friends’ Totems, and your Bonded friends will only be able to navigate to your last known location.
Sometimes, we just want to wander and side quest in peace – and that’s okay! Once you turn your Totem back on, your location will update on your friends’ devices so they can find you. 🫶
Designed with Simplicity in Mind
The Power Button may seem like a small detail, but it’s the gateway to unlocking everything the Totem Compass has to offer.
The Totem Compass is designed to empower connection, simplify experiences, and add beauty to life’s most magical moments. The Power Button encapsulates all of these values: a simple action that sets in motion a world of possibilities, whether you’re finding your friends at a live event or exploring on your own terms.
We hope this guide makes your experience with the Totem Compass even smoother, so you can focus on what matters most—being present, feeling real, and sharing unforgettable moments with the people you love. Stay tuned for future tutorials, and as always, let the lights guide you.
