How does the Totem Compass work?
Totems use GNSS to determine their locations, and then leverage the Unity Mesh Network™ to communicate that location to each other without any cell service, wifi, or bluetooth. Our software uses that data to determine the directional heading of your friends, and guides you in their direction using a ring of pretty lights. Read more on our blog.
Can I use the Totem Compass indoors?
Some buildings and metal structures can interfere with the Totem’s satellite connection, making it difficult to reliably navigate to peers. For this reason, the Totem Compass is best used outdoors.
Pairing your Totem Compass with the Totem Compass App may help functionality in indoor environments.
Does it work on Cruise Ships?
Totems indicate the lateral direction of your friends, so they can't tell you when someone is above you or below you. It couldn't help you find what floor your tribe is on, but it could navigate to them if you were outside on the deck!
What happens when you get out of Range?
When a friend gets out of range, their Bond Light will dim and begin to breathe while it continues to point you to their last known location.
In most cases, walking in that direction will get you back in range so their Bond Light can update again based on your friend’s real-time location.
Can I see the distance of my friend?
When you are within 100 meters from your friend, their Bond Light on your Totem will begin to expand, telling you that they are close by. As you get closer, their light gets larger and larger until you re-unite once again.
Are there software updates for the Totem Compass?
Yes! Performance-improving Software Updates are released regularly and are completely free to download. Check the Software Updates page for more details.
What if it gets Wet?
Your Totem is built for outdoor events, so no need to worry about rain, sweat, or humidity. Just don’t go swimming with it—they are not designed to be submerged in water or subjected to splashing without a waterproof case.
Can someone use a Totem to track me against my will?
The Totem Compass is designed with your safety—and consent—in mind. Every Totem Compass contains a secure “key” that ensures people can only track you if you choose to Bond with them.
Totems use a secure, two-way Bonding process that requires mutual consent from both people simultaneously. Totems can only be bonded when they are right next to each other, and you can delete someone at any time using Peer Management Mode.
Functions like these, layered on top of the Totems’ secure keys, make it nearly impossible for anyone to track you without your consent or knowledge.
What if I don't want to be found?
This one’s easy—simply turn your Totem Compass off!
Does the Totem vibrate?
The Totem Compass does not use haptic feedback (vibration). Vibration is hard to sense when you're at an event or in a crowd, so we made the Totem communicate solely through light and color.
Does it work internationally?
Yes! The Totem Compass uses a global constellation of satellites to determine its location, meaning that your Totem will work beautifully anywhere in the world (as long as you have a clear view of the sky). Their communication protocol broadcasts on 2.4GHz, one of the only frequencies legal in 100% of countries worldwide.
