What Is Totem Compass Version 5.0?

Version 5.0 is a major free software update for the Totem Compass focused on making the product require less thinking, less setup, and less manual intervention.

At Totem, one of our favorite things about building a software-powered wearable is that the physical product can continue getting better long after it leaves our warehouse.

The Totem Compass you bought months ago can gain longer battery life, smarter navigation, stronger communication, and entirely new capabilities simply by downloading an update.

Version 5.0 may be our clearest example of that yet.

The biggest improvements include:

• Passive Auto-Calibration while using Vibe Mode

• Up to 12+ hours of battery life in Vibe Mode

• A cleaner, more dynamic Vibe Mode experience

• Smarter navigation that automatically manages inactive Bonds

Auto-Calibration Makes Your Totem Compass Easier to Use

Your Totem needs to know which direction is North in order to tell you which direction your friend is located.

Traditionally, that requires calibration.

Previous versions of the Totem Compass made the process simple: if your Compass needed to recalibrate, you could enter Compass Mode and turn in a circle while Totem updated its heading.

It worked.

But Version 5.0 asks a better question:

Why should you have to think about calibration at all?

 

How Totem Compass Auto-Calibration Works

With Version 5.0, your Totem can now passively calibrate itself while you naturally move around in Vibe Mode or Eco Mode.

Instead of stopping what you’re doing to perform a calibration spin, the Compass continually gathers the information it needs in the background.

As you dance, walk around a festival, explore a campground, or simply move throughout your day, Totem can use that natural movement to maintain its calibration.

In most situations, your Compass can gather the calibration information it needs before you would have even completed a traditional manual spin.

Manual calibration is still available when you want it.

You should just need it a whole lot less.

That means fewer steps between pulling out your Totem and finding your friend.

Which is exactly how we think technology should work.

Totem Compass Battery Life Can Now Reach 12+ Hours in Vibe Mode

Battery life has been one of the biggest areas of continuous improvement for the Totem Compass.

Version 5.0 takes another major step forward.

Our redesigned Vibe Mode can now deliver up to 12+ hours of battery life, with many users seeing roughly one to two additional hours of use compared with previous software versions.

And we didn’t get there by making Vibe Mode less fun.

We made it smarter.

A Redesigned Vibe Mode That Uses Power More Efficiently

Vibe Mode is Totem’s ambient festival mode, allowing your Compass to react to the environment around you while your Bonds remain visible around the device.

For Version 5.0, we rebuilt major portions of how Vibe Mode behaves.

The result is an experience that feels:

• Cleaner

• More stable

• More dynamic

• More responsive to sound

• More power-efficient

Instead of simply turning things down to save battery, we optimized how and when the Totem uses its resources.

That means your Totem can spend more time doing what matters and less time consuming power unnecessarily.

For someone heading into a long festival day, an additional hour or two of battery life can make a very real difference.

And if maximum battery life is the priority, Eco Mode can stretch your Totem even further, beyond 20 hours depending on use and conditions.

Smarter Navigation Keeps Your Most Useful Friend Locations Front and Center

A Totem Compass can maintain multiple Bonds at once, allowing you to navigate between different friends in your group.

But there’s an interesting challenge that comes with that.

What happens when someone you Bonded with hasn’t been seen by the network in hours?

Their last known location still exists, but eventually that information becomes less useful.

Version 5.0 introduces a smarter way of handling those inactive connections.

What Happens to Inactive Bonds?

When a Bond has not provided an updated location for more than two hours (changed from four originally), Version 5.0 automatically collects that Bond into the Touch Crystal.

The Bond isn’t deleted.

You haven’t lost your connection.

Instead, Totem simply moves stale location information out of the primary navigation ring so the lights surrounding your Compass are more likely to represent people with useful, current locations.

Think of it as your Compass quietly cleaning up after itself.

When that Bond becomes active again, Totem can bring the relevant information back into your navigation experience.

The goal is simple:

When you see a friend glowing around your Compass, you should be able to trust that light to help lead you toward them.

Version 5.0 Makes the Unity Mesh Network Smarter

Some of the most important changes in Version 5.0 are also the ones you may never consciously notice.

That’s a good thing.

The Totem Compass doesn’t rely on traditional cellular service to find your friends. Instead, Totems communicate directly with one another through our Unity Mesh Network™.

That allows nearby Totems to help relay information across the network, extending communication beyond a simple one-device-to-one-device connection.

The more Totems there are around you, the more powerful that concept becomes.

What Is a Mesh Network?

In a traditional direct connection, Device A needs to communicate directly with Device B.

A mesh network adds another possibility.

If Device A cannot directly reach Device B, other devices between them may be able to help carry information across the network.

That creates multi-hop communication.

At a music festival with hundreds or thousands of Totem Compasses spread across the grounds, those individual devices can collectively create a massive offline communication network.

No cellular tower required.

What Changed in Version 5.0?

Version 5.0 includes substantial improvements to the way Totems communicate, route information, and prioritize messages across the Unity Mesh Network.

The network can handle more communication during each messaging window, respond more intelligently to incoming information, and make better decisions about how data moves between Totems.

We’ve also continued improving dynamic routing and multi-hop performance so information can move efficiently through large groups of devices.

In other words:

You shouldn’t have to think about routing tables, communication windows, or network hops.

You should just pull out your Compass and find your friend.

Testing Version 5.0 at Massive Music Festivals

The most important testing environment for Totem isn’t our office.

It’s the real world.

Thousands of people moving simultaneously.

Competing wireless signals.

Huge crowds.

Long distances.

Changing conditions.

And absolutely no patience for technology that doesn’t work when you need it.

Festivals give us one of the most demanding environments imaginable for an offline GPS friend finder, which is exactly why so much of Version 5.0 was refined through real-world testing.

At Burning Man, for example, network data following our Version 5 improvements showed a 261% increase in mesh relays per communication period, with one recorded connection traveling through 26 different Totem Compasses.

That’s the idea behind the Unity Mesh Network at its largest scale.
