The Totem Compass is a screen-free wearable that helps you find your friends in big, crowded places without relying on cell service. Each friend you Bond with shows up as a colored light on your Compass that points toward them. Pick a light, follow it, and go find your people.
It was built for music festivals, where phones struggle the most, and it works just as well at campgrounds, amusement parks, and anywhere else a group splits up. When you're not using it to find someone, it hangs around your neck in Vibe Mode, with lights that react to the music around you.
This page covers what the Totem Compass is, what it does, how it finds friends without cell service, what's new with Version 5.0, and how to get Totems for your whole group. More than 65,000 people in 80 countries use Totem to spend less time searching and more time together.
What Does the Totem Compass Do?
The Totem Compass has one main job: pointing you back to the people you came with. It does that with a handful of features, and none of them involve a screen.
- Friend-finding. Hold your Compass flat and it switches into Compass Mode. Each Bonded friend appears as a colored light on the ring around the edge (the Halo), pointing in their direction. As you get closer, the light grows. When you're close, it moves into the Touch Crystal at the center. Look up.
- Bonds. A Bond is the connection between two Totem Compasses. You create one by holding two Totems together and pressing their Touch Crystals, and each Compass can hold up to 8 Bonds. With Smart Groups, you can Bond a whole crew in one go.
- Vibe Mode. Hang your Compass vertically and it becomes a sound-reactive light show on your chest, with your own color glowing in the Touch Crystal.
- SOS. Press and hold the SOS button on the back to silently alert your Bonded friends that you need them to come find you.
- The Totem Compass App (optional). The free app adds software updates, Bond management, offline event maps, and custom waypoints. You don't need it to find your friends.
How Does the Totem Compass Work Without Cell Service?
Your phone depends on cell towers, and cell towers get overwhelmed when tens of thousands of people gather in one field. The Totem Compass skips them entirely. It uses three technologies together:
- Satellite positioning (GNSS). Each Compass works out where it is using satellite navigation, the same family of systems as GPS.
- A peer-to-peer radio protocol. Totems share their locations directly with each other on the 2.4 GHz band. On their own, two Totems can reach each other at up to roughly 1,000 meters (about two-thirds of a mile) in open, ideal conditions. Terrain, obstacles, and crowds all affect that, so range is never guaranteed.
- The Unity Mesh Network™. At big events, other people's Totems relay messages between you and your friends, even if you aren't Bonded with them. That's why a crowd, which is bad news for your phone, can actually help your Totem.
At Lost Lands 2026 (Legend Valley, September 2026), an estimated 5,000+ Totem Compasses on-site carried more than 330,000 messages over the weekend, and one message traveled a record 35 hops from Totem to Totem. Results depend on how many Totems are around you, so treat that as what the network can do at a busy event, not what every event will look like.

No Screens, No Apps Required, No Worries
The Totem Compass is screen-free. No notifications, no maps to squint at, no group chat full of "where r u."
Pretty crazy, huh? No screens? No apps? What is this, the 90s?
Smartphones, apps, screens… they all have an insidious way of ripping you out of life's most beautiful moments without your conscious consent. We aren't here to pull you out of the real world. We are here to help immerse you in the real world.
The Totem Compass is designed to allow people to be more present during the most magical moments of their lives. To experience real joy alongside the ones they love. To connect on a deeper human level.

The Totem Compass lets you stay present with the people you love.
Who Is the Totem Compass For?
Anyone whose group tends to scatter. The Totem Compass was designed by festival-goers, for festival-goers, and that's still where it gets the hardest workout. People also use it for:
- Multi-day camping festivals, where "meet back at camp" means very little at 2 a.m.
- Amusement parks and family outings, where one person always wanders off to the churro stand
- Outdoor adventures and big open-air events, where cell coverage is patchy
It works best outdoors, because it needs a view of the sky to find satellites. It isn't designed for indoor navigation.
What's New in Version 5.0?
Totem Compasses get better through free software updates, and Totem Compass Version 5.0 is one of the biggest yet. It adds:
- Auto-Calibration. Your Compass now calibrates itself in the background while you move around in Vibe Mode or Eco Mode, so you rarely need to do the old calibration spin. Manual calibration is still there if you want it.
- Longer battery life. Up to 12+ hours in the redesigned Vibe Mode, and beyond 20 hours in Eco Mode, depending on use.
- Smarter navigation. Bonds that haven't sent a fresh location in a long while collect into the Touch Crystal, so the lights on the ring are more likely to point at friends with current locations.
- A stronger Unity Mesh Network. More messages per communication window and better routing in dense crowds.

One Tip for Totem Compass Success: Find Open Sky
The Totem Compass uses satellites to work out where it is before it can guide you to anyone. For the fastest, most precise satellite connection, go outside with a clear view of the sky.
When your Compass is searching, you'll see a swirling light. It usually connects in less than 5 minutes, so give it up to 15. Move away from big structures and stay in open spaces, particularly if you know your friends are looking for you (or if you're using SOS Mode).

A clear view of the sky helps your Totem Compass connect to satellites.
Totem Compass FAQ
Does the Totem Compass need cell service, Wi-Fi, or a phone?
Not to find your friends. Totems talk directly to each other. The optional Totem Compass App, which runs on your phone and connects over Bluetooth, is only needed for extras like software updates, maps, and Bond management.
Is the Totem Compass a tracker?
Not in the way an item tracker is. It's a friend finder for people who choose to find each other. Bonds are made in person, by holding two Totems together and pressing both Touch Crystals, and each light on your Compass points to a Compass you Bonded with. A Bond connects Compasses, not people: if your friend leaves theirs charging at camp, it will lead you to a very nice charging cable.
How many friends can a Totem Compass find?
Up to 8, with current software. Bigger groups can overlap their Bonds so everyone is connected to someone. Our guide to how to Bond your Totem Compass walks through it.
Does SOS contact emergency services?
No. SOS alerts only the friends you're Bonded with. It isn't a replacement for event staff, medical teams, or emergency services, so in an emergency, find staff or call for help.
How long does the battery last?
On Version 5.0, up to 12+ hours in Vibe Mode, and beyond 20 hours in Eco Mode, depending on use. A full charge takes about 45 minutes.
