A Totem Compass can hold up to 8 Bonds, so it can point you toward up to eight friends at once without relying on cell service. And with Smart Groups, you can Bond your whole crew in one go, giving each person a single color that matches on every Compass in the group.

How Many Friends Can a Totem Compass Find?

With current Totem software, each Totem Compass can hold up to 8 Bonds. That’s up from four in earlier versions of the software. The change came straight from the Totem community of 65,000+ users in 80 countries: “I wish I could connect with more people at once” was one of the most common pieces of feedback we heard, with hundreds of requests from bigger groups who were tired of deciding who “made the cut.”

Your Totem gets new features through free software updates. If your Compass is still showing four friends at most, it’s time to update. The easiest way is through the Totem Compass App over Bluetooth, and our Totem Compass Version 5.0 post explains how. Update every Totem in your group before you go, so everyone gets the same features.

What About Groups Bigger Than Nine?

Bonds don’t form a closed circle. Every Compass can Bond with any eight other Compasses, so a big crew can overlap their Bonds like a family tree: John Bonds with Alli and Tim, Tim also Bonds with Elayne and Rand, and so on. Nobody has to be Bonded with everyone for everyone to be findable by someone. Our guide on how to Bond your Totem Compass shows how that daisy chain works.

What Is a Bond on the Totem Compass?

A Bond is a direct connection between two Totem Compasses. Once two Compasses are Bonded, each one can point toward the other.

Totems share their locations through encrypted messages, and Bonding is what tells your Compass which messages to read. There’s no cell service, Wi-Fi, or app involved. And Bonding in the dark, with rings of light swirling around a table, looks a lot like casting a spell. 🧙‍♀️

Once you’re Bonded, you can:

• See the direction of each Bonded friend’s Compass, updated in real time while your Totems are communicating
• Find each other without relying on cell service, even in crowds where phones struggle
• Send an SOS alert that tells your Bonded friends it’s time to come find you
• Keep your Bonds when your Totem is turned off or the battery dies

One detail worth knowing: a Bond connects Compasses, not people. Your light points to your friend’s Totem. If they leave it charging at camp, it will lead you to a very nice charging cable.

Two Ways to Bond Your Group

You can Bond one friend at a time, or the whole group at once with Smart Groups. Both work. They just handle colors very differently.

Bonding One Friend at a Time

• Hold your two Totems together, tip to tip.
• Press and hold both Touch Crystals at the same time.
• A blue ring fills, shows your new Bond color, then collects into the Touch Crystal. You’re Bonded.

With one-at-a-time Bonding, colors are assigned in the order you Bond. Your first four Bonds are always Pink, then Green, then Blue, then Yellow. That means you might be Pink on one friend’s Compass and Yellow on another’s, depending on when they Bonded with you.

Your Touch Crystal color is separate, too. You can tap the Crystal to pick your own color, and it won’t necessarily match the color you are on anyone else’s Totem. To check which color a friend is, hold your Totems together and your Touch Crystal will show their Bond color. Our guide to Bond Lights and Colors explains the details.

That works well for two or three friends. With eight, “wait, which one is Jess?” becomes a recurring campsite conversation.

Smart Groups: Bond Everyone at Once

Smart Groups are Totem’s group Bonding feature. Instead of pairing off one by one, your whole group Bonds together in a single process.

One thing to know first: creating a Smart Group replaces any Bonds already on those Totems. If you want to keep a Bond with someone outside the group, Bond with them one at a time after the Smart Group is set up.

Here’s how it works:

• Get everyone together. Hold or place all the Totems side by side, horizontally.
• Pick a leader. Choose one Totem to be the Primary Totem.
• Begin Bonding. Touch and hold the Primary Totem’s Touch Crystal for 8 seconds, until its ring starts flashing through colors.
• Add the rest. Touch and hold each remaining Totem’s Touch Crystal until it shows the same flashing colors.
• Lock it in. Touch and hold the Primary Totem’s Touch Crystal one final time to finish Bonding.

You’ll know it worked when every Touch Crystal locks into place with its own unique color, and all the Bond lights move into the Touch Crystal (because everyone is standing right next to each other). If it doesn’t work, turn off all the Totems and start again, or Bond individually instead.

Here’s the part that makes Smart Groups so useful: each person’s locked-in Crystal color becomes their Bond color on everyone else’s Compass. If Maya’s Crystal is green, Maya is green on every Totem in the group. No memorizing, no checking, no “I thought you were Blue.”

Smart Groups vs. One-at-a-Time Bonding

What the Lights on Your Totem Compass Mean

Your Totem changes depending on how you hold it. Hang it vertically and the Touch Crystal shows your own color. Hold it horizontally and it switches into Compass Mode, where the lights show your Bonded friends.

Version 5.0 also tidies up stale Bonds. When a Bond hasn’t sent an updated location in more than two hours, your Compass collects it into the Touch Crystal instead of leaving an out-of-date light on the rim. The Bond isn’t deleted, and it comes back once that Compass is active again. A light collected this way pulses, so after Version 5.0, a pulsing light in the Crystal means “stale,” not “nearby.” The result: the lights on your rim are more likely to point to friends with current locations.

How to Keep a Large Festival Group Together Without Cell Service

Cell service tends to get worse as crowds get bigger, which is exactly when you need it most. The Totem Compass works differently. It uses satellites to know where it is, and it talks directly to other Totems instead of cell towers. At large events, other people’s Totems can relay messages through the Unity Mesh Network™, even if you aren’t Bonded with them. How the Totem Compass works goes deeper on the tech.

Range is never guaranteed. It depends on terrain, obstacles, and how many Totems are around you. But the network can get big. At Lost Lands 2026 (Legend Valley, September 2026), 5,000+ Compasses were in use on-site among up to 50,000 attendees. Over the weekend they carried more than 330,000 messages, and one message traveled a record 35 hops from Totem to Totem, through record rainfall and two evacuations.

A few habits make the biggest difference for big groups:

• Update every Totem before you leave. That way everyone in the group has the same features and the latest mesh improvements, and nobody is running updates on festival Wi-Fi that doesn’t exist.
• Bond at camp, not at the gate. Set up your Smart Group while everyone is in one place and nobody is holding a drink in each hand.
• Give your Totems some open sky. Your Compass needs a satellite fix before it can navigate. Outside, it usually takes less than 5 minutes; give it up to 15.
• Know who’s who. Without a Smart Group, check colors before you split up. Different Skin colors also make it easy to tell whose Compass is whose.
• Drop a meetup point. The free Totem Compass App lets you drop custom waypoints, so everyone knows where the fallback spot is. Waypoints use Bond slots, so leave room for one if your group is close to eight.
• Charge overnight. On Version 5.0, a Totem can last up to 12+ hours in Vibe Mode, and Eco Mode can stretch that beyond 20 hours depending on use. A full charge takes about 45 minutes over USB-C.
• Know how SOS works. Press and hold the SOS button on the back of your Totem to send a discreet alert to your Bonded friends. It only reaches the people you’re Bonded with. It doesn’t contact event staff or emergency services, so in an emergency, find medical staff or call for help.
